Meanwhile, Ed Monreal, Manila International Airport Authorities General Manager has ordered an investigation to "to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt of a female passenger to sneak out of the country a 6-day old male infant whom she reportedly kept inside a bag she was carrying".

The suspect was to board her flight to the USA when she failed to present the infant's travel documents, a spokesman for the Bureau of Immigration, Melvin Mabulac, said.

Philippines said the baby was just six days old.

An American woman was busted trying to smuggle a newborn baby out of the Philippines by hiding the child in her carry-on luggage, officials said.

She was trying to board a flight to the USA around 6:20 a.m., CNN Philippines reported.

According to Mabulac, the woman appeared to be traveling alone and only presented her personal passport.

Mr Mabulac said they could not confirm the age of the infant or if Ms Talbot was a legal guardian of the baby, since the authorities did not find any travel document to indicate the child's information. "That's the time we were able to apprehend her - when she passed through the next x-ray", Medina told NBC News.

In the meantime, the newborn baby has been transferred to the Social Welfare Department's custody and is now safe.

Security workers at the airport's check-in and immigration counters did not notice the baby at first, according to the Philippines' National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
