Twins came from out of nowhere to set home run record

Twins outfielder Jake Cave, who ranks 12th on the team in home runs, has seven homers this year.

Mitch Garver was the man of the hour for Minnesota.

The Twins set a new single-season home run record on Saturday against the Tigers, hitting their 268th home run as a team. Cron and Nelson Cruz all hit home runs, with Cruz's 450-foot blast to center in the top of the eighth inning tying the record.

With Major League Baseball hitters poised to surpass the collective home run record of 6,104 set in 2017, it's no real surprise that the team record has been eclipsed.

Garver led off the sport with a towering house run to left box, and after the Tigers spoke back with an unearned run, Kepler put the Twins up 2-1 along with his 36th homer of the yr. He struck out the side in the third and sixth innings, and 12 of his punchout victims went down swinging. But as many critics of MLB's home run explosion point out, the inflated stats from this era make comparisons across time meaningless.

They've also got 11 players with at least 10 home runs on the season.

Hudson allowed four runs in 7 2/3 innings - the only runs he has allowed in 26 1/3 innings during his streak. He walked none and struck out one in what was tied for his shortest performance of the season.

The Tigers came back with two runs in the bottom of the first on Rodriguez's RBI double off the third-base bag, a wild pitch and a run-scoring single by Dawel Lugo.

Boyd also gave up four home runs.

"I had no idea that that was the homer to tie it", Cruz said. Victor Reyes had two hits during the outburst. "I find out later when I was in the dugout". The Twins finished 28th in the majors in home runs that year.

Boston's J.D. Martinez extended his hitting streak to eight games with two hits along with two RBIs.

Kershaw (13-4) exited after allowing a season-high five earned runs in a season-low five innings. He has thrown 134 innings this year.

Tigers: DH Miguel Cabrera took batting practice for the first time since leaving Tuesday's loss to Cleveland with left biceps tightness.

Twins: Pineda (10-5) takes the mound Sunday in the third game of this four-game series. Despite not being as sharp as he's been during the first half of the season, Gibby was the winning pitcher for the second consecutive start, which happened only for the second time since June 1.
