Williams rolls into semis with 100th US Open win

Elina Svitolina booked her spot in the US Open semi-finals; next it is the turn of Gael Monfils.

"I had some tough matches (in the) Round of 16, quarterfinals before I started to win them", said Svitolina, who also became the first Ukrainian woman to reach the U.S. Open semifinals.

While Williams, who is chasing her record-tying 24th Grand Slam title, is a tantalizing opponent for fans, Svitolina insisted she didn't care who she would be facing when asked before Williams' quarterfinal win on Tuesday. The stakes were similar in this match up for Konta as she hadn't been able to get a win over the Ukrainian in four meetings. She has reached that round in the other three major tournaments.

Svitolina rifled a backhand victor on break point for a 4-3 lead in the second set, celebrating with an emphatic fist pump in front of the crowd that included her French boyfriend Gael Monfils, who plays his quarter-final today. I was going very slowly.

"I was relieved I could serve it out and just very happy with the way I handled the pressure". It more I think was over relief that I could serve it out, because I had the match point on 5-3.

"I do feel that was probably the best I felt her play against me".

Sheriff Brown said that oxygen or propane tanks could have exploded during the fire, but there was no sign this sparked the blaze. Between four and six victims were seen in the wreckage on Monday, but they were unable to be recovered before nightfall.

"He's there for me, he's supporting me, and I'm there for him as well", she said during her run at the All England Club. "More than anything I´m just having fun every time I come out here".

She has performed well on her Grand Slam appearances this year, including reaching a semi-final at the French Open and a quarter-final at Wimbledon. "This really changed, I think, for the past, I don't know, nine, 10 months".

Svitolina, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals and also won the WTA Tour Finals previous year, is one of the most consistent ball-strikers in the women's game and her ability to keep putting the ball back into play proved Konta's downfall.

"Obviously, I wanted to go one step further and be in the semi-finals and the final, and lifting the trophy", Konta said. There is a lot to be proud of there.

Cheered on by a pumped-up Tiger Woods, Nadal was on fire and will play Argie Diego Schwartzman tonight for a place in Friday's semi's.

Swiss 13th seed Belinda Bencic faces good friend Donna Vekic, the 23rd seed from Croatia, in the other last-eight clash.
