Dorian virtually stalled over the northwestern Bahamas in recent days as a Category 5 storm that caused widespread devastation in parts of the island archipelago.

"The eyewall of Dorian continues to move away from Grand Bahama Island".

The storm, upgraded Sunday morning to a catastrophic Category 5 storm with sustained wind speeds of 160 miles per hour, struck the Abacos islands in the Bahamas.

Dorian is the second-most-powerful Atlantic storm in modern recorded history, behind only Hurricane Allen in 1980.

Helping keep their customers connected during Hurricane Dorian, four of the big wireless carriers in the US are waiving fees due to the storm.

For what's worth, the company has already started testing a similar feature on its Instagram platform. Wong's post suggests the social network is testing this feature in its Android app.

A storm surge warning is in effect from Jupiter Inlet, Fla., to the South Santee River, S.C. "On this track, the core of extremely unsafe Hurricane Dorian will gradually move north of Grand Bahama Island through this evening", the NHC added.

"We have seen the life-and-death effects of this storm in the Bahamas, and we urge everyone on the [Outer Banks] islands to leave".

"A turn toward the north is forecast by Wednesday evening, followed by a turn toward the north-northeast Thursday morning".

The hurricane could move near or over the South and North Carolina coasts on Wednesday or Thursday but is not expected to be a major hurricane by then. Van Dam also warned that though the storm has gotten slightly weaker, going down to a Category 3, it will also get larger as tropical force winds expand from the center.

The hurricane center said a 10-15 foot storm surge remains possible on Grand Bahama.
