Walmart Caves To Far-Left, Stops Selling Ammo And Guns

"As a company, we experienced two horrific events in one week, and we will never be the same", he continued. It will continue to sell hunting rifles and related ammunition. Walmart believes it is not among the top three gun sellers in the industry, but it estimates it has about a 20% market share of ammunition sales.

McMillon, who is a gun owner, said the company is also calling on the president and members of Congress to advance "common sense measures", like more stringent background checks.

The largest US arms retailer, which has been under pressure to change its policies on gun sales, also said it would discontinue handgun sales in Alaska, the only state where it still sells these guns.

In a memo circulated to employees on Tuesday, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon announced that the company would no longer sell handgun ammunition or "short-barrel rifle ammunition" like .223 and 5.56 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation caliber, "that, while commonly used in some hunting rifles, can also be used in large capacity clips on military-style weapons".

Walmart reminded customers that it has changed its policy regarding firearms sales in the past, including stopping the sale of military-style rifles such as the AR-15, raising the age limit to purchase firearms or ammunition to 21, and requiring a "green light" on background checks.

"McMillion acknowledged that the stores would still offer long barrel deer rifles and shotguns, and cited incidents where individuals have entered Walmart stores "attempting to make a statement and test our response" before continuing, "... we are respectfully requesting that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores or Sam's Clubs in states where "open carry" is permitted - unless they are authorized law enforcement officers".

McMillon on Tuesday resisted calls from some quarters that the world's biggest retailer get out of the gun-selling business altogether, saying its remaining assortment of firearms will focus on hunting and sport shooting. "The status quo is unacceptable".

The company's latest measures come after a man with an assault rifle killed 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on August 3, just days after a Walmart employee in Southaven, Miss., fatally shot two co-workers. "Given our decades of experience selling firearms, we are also offering to serve as a resource in the national debate on responsible gun sales", he said.

Despite its history of selling hunting weapons that goes back to Walmart's origins, Walmart has shifted its gun policies and strengthened gun safety measures.

"We must also do more, as a country, to understand the root causes that lead to this type of violent behavior", McMillon said.
