U.S. teenager shoots dead 5 family members in Alabama

"The 14-year old caller was interviewed and confessed to shooting all five members of his family in the residence", it said on Twitter.

The sheriff's office said five people were shot, with three dying at the scene and two later in hospital.

The Limestone County Sheriff's office said a 14-year-old confessed to the killings.

A police officer then confirmed to CNN that the two members in critical condition had since died. Authorities did not describe any possible motive.

Limestone County Sheriff's Dept. spokesman Stephen Young told WAFF that the boy called police around 1:15 a.m., several hours after the shootings, and told deputies he was downstairs when he heard shots fired on the floor above him.

"It's an absolutely awful thing, and I can't wrap my arms around it", Elkmont's mayor, Tracy Compton, told the News Courier. The call came in approximately 10:30 p.m.

Elkmont is located a few miles south of the Alabama-Tennessee line.

"Please be in prayer for our school and community".

Deputies stated they believe the teen used a 9 mm handgun in the shooting and tossed it before calling 911.
