Top seed Djokovic (shoulder) out at US Open

Djokovic, a 16-time major victor and triple US Open champion, was carrying a left shoulder injury but had offered little information as to its severity.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is out of the US Open after quitting through injury against Swiss 23rd seed Stan Wawrinka as defeat loomed in an electrifying fourth-round match.

Djokovic shook his head as he walked over to the chair umpire to say he was retiring from the match because of that shoulder while trailing 6-4, 7-5, 2-1 and being thoroughly outplayed Sunday night. "I'm planning to. I mean, I don't see an end behind the corner at all", said Djokovic, who had been 11-0 in fourth-rounders at Flushing Meadows until this one.

"That's never the way you want to finish a match", Wawrinka said on the court after the win.

Now he's ranked 24th and is the No. 23 seed in the US Open. He often looked the firmer striker of the ball during rallies, and he left Djokovic resorting to drop shots that fluttered into the net and even a midpoint challenge on a line call late in the second set, after which Djokovic lost both the challenge and the point.

National Football League practice squad: Rules, eligibility and minimum salary for 2019
Practice squads may begin to form immediately at noon CT on Sunday, Sept. 1, once players have cleared waivers. While the NFL doesn't have a minor-league system or a developmental league, there is the practice squad.

Djokovic and Wawrinka are good friends, so obviously the two understand each other.

Wawrinka is seeded just 23rd in NY, having battled through knee injuries in recent times.

Wawrinka underwent knee surgery in 2017 and has been working his way back up the rankings since.

"I want to keep my level of tonight".

Up next for Wawrinka will be Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev, who beat German qualifier Dominik Koepfer earlier on Sunday to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
