Knife attack kills 1, injures 9 near Lyon; suspect detained

One person was found dead and nine others wounded on August 31 in the city of Villeurbanne, near Lyon in central France, after a suspected knife attack.

The motive of the attack is unknown.

A suspect has been taken into custody.

Final Might, a parcel bomb in entrance of a baker's store in central Lyon left 14 individuals barely injured.

The mayor of Villeurbanne, Jean-Paul Bret, paid tribute to people at the scene and security staff at the nearby metro station who overpowered the suspect as he tried to make his escape.

While initial reports from local officials suggested police were looking for a second man, a police source and the prosecutor's office subsequently said the suspect acted alone.

He also tweeted a high-resolution picture of the location, with annotations pointing to damaged vehicles and the launch gantry. This is the third failed launch attempt for Iran this year, with earlier ones taking place in January and February .

Three people remained in critical condition after the attack.

The attack happened at around 4:30 pm (1430 GMT) at a bus stop near the local station.

The victim who died was a 19-year-old man, and it was unclear if he knew the attacker, according to police.

Officials said the attack, which took place in Villeurbanne, a suburb of Lyon in the southeastern part of France, was not terrorism related.

France remains on high alert after several deadly Islamic terror attacks in 2015 and 2016.
