Disney Cruise staff shelters in Bahamas as Dorian rolls over

Disney Cruise staff shelters in Bahamas as Dorian rolls over

Following the woman's Twitter complaint, the company released a statement: "Castaway Cay remains south of the more significant weather and is now experiencing tropical storm force winds, which based on the current forecast, are expected for the next several hours before gradually diminishing". Green has since deleted her Twitter account.

Disney said that its staff on the Bahamas' Castaway Cay are safe as Hurricane Dorian pummeled the island chain.

Castaway Cay, originally known as Gorda Cay, is just off the southern end of the island.

Castaway Cay is the first private island in the cruising industry. In a statement the company claimed their highest priority was the safety of their crew. Early reports suggest the catastrophic hurricane severely damaged or destroyed as many as 13,000 houses.

Kim Prunty, Disney's vice president of communications and public affairs, responded to the anxious woman on Twitter Sunday night.

"The Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis have the people of the Bahamas firmly in our thoughts and prayers during their time of greatest need, and we stand in solidarity with them as they try to cope with loss of life and property in the aftermath", the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis said, adding: "We send our love to the people of the Bahamas, as well as the assurance that we will do whatever we can to support them and help them rebuild and recover". The employees would be safe because there is a shelter there stocked with water and food, the spokesperson said.

The woman then asked her: "Why risk the lives of 97 staff members?"

Poland Marks 80th Anniversary of Most Devastating War in Human History
A parliamentary commission is now working on a new analysis of the extent of Poland's wartime human and material losses. Britain gave Germany, then led by Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, an ultimatum to cease military operations in the country.

A sister of a Disney worker left on the island argued the staff "shouldn't be in that situation". They had plenty of time to evacuate, but the decision was made to stay.

Disney could not confirm Sunday night how many workers were on the island, but according to Disney's website, about 60 workers live there year-round.

With its maximum sustained winds of 185mph and gusts up to 220mph, Dorian tied the record for the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever to come ashore, equalling the Labour Day hurricane of 1935, before the storms were named.

Still, Dorian remained an extremely unsafe, life-threateneing Category 5 storm, the center said.

Quincy Parker told ZNS Bahamas radio station on Monday morning that crews are working to restore power on the island that lies south of the path that Hurricane Dorian is expected to take.

The storm was crawling slowly west at 1 mph (2 kph), with its center 30 miles (50 kilometers) east-northeast of Freeport, Grand Bahama Island and 115 miles (185 kilometers) east of West Palm Beach, Florida.
