It said it had deployed "multiple rescue assets along with assets from local agencies" to assist those still trapped on the 22 metre boat, near Santa Cruz Island off the coast from Los Angeles.

Ventura County officials told KTLA-TV that 34 people are dead so far, but a rescue is still underway.

Five people, believed to be crew members, were rescued, including one person who suffered minor injuries, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. "I don't have an exact number", Nash said. The U.S. Coast Guard could not immediately confirm that figure.

"It's a large boat, and we know we have numerous fatalities".

It also said rainfall will produce flash floods in the coastal Carolinas and Georgia. Henry McMaster ordered a mandatory evacuation for parts of eight coastal counties.

At least 34 people were killed in a fire on a ship near the island of Santa Cruz in California.

Five people have been rescued and 30 people are now missing, the Santa Barbara Fire Department confirmed to ABC News. "Where that plays in, after we figure out what we've got, it's where to transport the bodies".

This is a developing story and will be updated.
