Maha: Death toll in chemical unit explosion mounts to 13

As many as 43 workers were rescued and taken to hospitals after the explosion in the plant located on the outskirts of Dhule city in Maharashtra state. The Shirpur police said that a case would be lodged about the incident after investigations were over. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. The magnitude of the explosion was so intense that buildings in surrounding villages shook. The condition of four injured workers was serious.

The injured have been admitted at the Dhule Civil Hospital and Shirpur Cottage Hospital.

Given the intensity of the blast and the fire that followed it, the number of casualties is likely to rise. A team of chemical experts and doctors also arrived at the location.

A police officer told Reuters that a 200-liter chemical barrel had exploded, causing fire to spread through the factory.

Questions on following safety procedures in such risky chemicals factories are already being raked up.
