First human West Nile Virus cases in Montana for 2019

Four birds have tested positive for West Nile virus.

A man in Franklin County is the first person in Washington state to be diagnosed with West Nile virus this year. Mosquito control is a shared responsibility and the District needs the help of the community to eliminate water-holding containers to reduce mosquito populations.

The district is closely monitoring virus activity in the counties, and officials anticipate that the season is far from over. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds.

There is also a less than one per cent chance West Nile virus could invade the central nervous system.

Earlier this month the virus's presence was confirmed in Northampton County with positive test results for mosquitoes collected in Wilson Boro and the City of Easton.

Arizona's updated public health statistics this week list Maricopa with more cases of infected people than any county, with 135 of 138 confirmed and probable cases statewide.

New positive samples of mosquitos infected with West Nile Virus has been discovered in Lakewood and Reseda, the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District reported Friday.

Use DEET-enhanced insect repellent or alternative: Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide the best protection.

Sleep under a mosquito bed net if air conditioned or screened-in rooms are not available or if you are sleeping outside.

GLACVCD works year-round to actively search for and manage water-holding areas such as gutters, ditches, storm drain channels, basins, and non-functional pools and ponds, but there are many more mosquito breeding sites on private property that require the public's attention.

WNV is transmitted to people and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito.

In rare cases, the virus can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord).

Numbers from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show Arizona has the most cases of any state this year. She grew up in Milan, Italy.
