FIU cancels classes as Hurricane Dorian approaches Florida

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it had maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour (96 kph) while moving northwest at 13 miles per hour (20 kph). Now Dorian is expected to approach the coast early Monday morning, where earlier forecasts had it near the state on Sunday.

This GOES-16 satellite image taken Wednesday, Aug. 28, 209, at 17:20 UTC and provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), shows Dorian, a Category 1 hurricane, crossing over the US and British Virgin Islands.

"Dorian could be near hurricane strength when it passes through the northern Windward Islands on Tuesday, and it is expected to be a hurricane when it moves near Puerto Rico and eastern Hispaniola", the Miami-based NHC said in a statement.

That came after Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vazquez Garced declared a state of emergency late the previous day in anticipation of the storm, the government announced on Twitter.

IT IS still too early to tell whether Tropical Storm Dorian will strengthen into a hurricane in time to affect the country.

A National Hurricane Center meteorologist says the threat to the US mainland from Tropical Storm Dorian has grown, with forecasts showing it could hit southeast coast as a Category 3 hurricane.

Dorian is expected to hit the eastern half of Puerto Rico by Wednesday afternoon and will bring heavy rains that could potentially trigger landslides and flooding.

Forecasters have said the storm could become a Category 3 hurricane as it approaches the USA mainland in the coming days.

"Dorian is not a player for us at this point", says Kim Buttrick, a National Weather Service meteorologist in MA.

A tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch are in effect.

Tropical Storm Dorian continues to gain strength and has winds of 70 miles per hour as of 11 a.m. Wednesday.

According to reports, the firefighters expect to be in Puerto Rico for up to two weeks.

He added a jab at Puerto Rican officials who have accused this administration of a slow and inadequate response to Hurricane Maria: "When they do, let them know it, and give them a big Thank You - Not like last time".

US Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, both Republicans from Florida, sent Trump a letter on Tuesday urging him to declare an emergency for Puerto Rico before the storm made landfall. Schools across Puerto Rico were closed Wednesday.

Libby says some areas could see more than 100 millimetres before the rain ends Friday morning. Also, as of now, Storm Erin is ahead of Dorian.
