Donald Trump would lose presidency if election was held today, poll says

Former Vice President Joe Biden has repeatedly incorrectly recounted a war story involving a USA service member who received a military honor from him and his latest telling of the story last week contained several inaccurate elements, including the time period, the heroic act, the type of medal and the location of the story, The Washington Post reported Thursday. Biden was going to pin a Silver Star on the soldier, but the Navy captain rejected him. Biden said, his jaw clenched and his voice rising to a shout. "We can lose a vice president, we can't lose many more of these kids", he recalled saying in response. I put it on him, he said, 'Don't do that to me, sir.

The former vice president, who has travelled more than 20 times to Afghanistan as president Barack Obama's deputy and more than three decades in the US Senate, described the retelling as "the God's truth, my word as a Biden".

He has told fictionalized versions of his hero's tale before, during a 2016 World War II commemoration in Australia and later that year during a campaign speech in support of then-presidential-nominee Hillary Clinton.

The key elements of the story were a Navy captain getting the silver star from Biden in Kunar province for an act of bravery involving rappelling.

The Post succinctly commented, "Except nearly every detail in the story appears to be incorrect".

That means Biden conflated at least three stories which took place over six years and threw in a change of branch and moved the hero from being enlisted to being commissioned. "That's the question. And I don't think it was".

The candidate denied "that there's anything I said about that that wasn't the essence of the story. The story was that he refused the medal because the fella he tried to save -and risked his life saving - died", Biden said.

"I don't understand what they're talking about, but the central point is it was absolutely accurate what I said", he told the Charleston Post and Courier. If he does, Biden said it would be ideal for his ticket to reflect the diversity of the American population.

Obama "knew that he and I had the same value set and the same political disposition as what we should do, and he knew if I ever had any doubt, I would come back to him", Biden added.

However, according to the Post, multiple details of the story Biden tells are inaccurate, including the people involved and the timing of the incident.

Biden, who has been attacked most forcefully by Harris, said that he believed "those who made the most direct attacks on one another haven't really benefited much by it at the end of the day". "So, you got to just speak to it".
