West Nile hits Louisiana, with 9 confirmed infections

West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes have been found in 39 unique ZIP codes, and mosquitoes testing positive for the St. Louis encephalitis virus have been found in 15 unique ZIP codes so far this season.

A 78-year-old man is the second West Nile virus related death this year, Fresno County Health Department officials said. But warns that it is only one case. There are now 28 human cases of the disease, spread by the bites of infected mosquitoes.

The West Nile virus is believed to have been brought to Cyprus by migratory birds which arrived in the spring or early summer.

Anyone who thinks they have West Nile virus symptoms should contact their healthcare provider.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reminding the public that West Nile virus is preventable.

There are no symptoms in most people. About one in five people will develop mild symptoms which include fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

"If a person is infected by West Nile virus, the risk of serious disease is low", the SEUHD press release said.

West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease in the United States and reemerges every summer in CT. About 1 in 150 people develop a severe illness affecting the central nervous system, the statement said.

West Nile Virus claimed a life in Fresno County, the Fresno County Department of Public Health announced Thursday.
