Syria Says It Responded to Attack Over Damascus

On Thursday, Netanyahu hinted of possible Israeli involvement in a series of blasts in the past few weeks that have hit weapon depots and bases belonging to paramilitary groups in Iraq, many of them backed by Iran.

A senior Revolutionary Guards commander has denied that Iranian targets had been hit in Israeli air strikes in Syria, the semi-official ILNA news agency reported.

Syrian state media also reported the attack saying Syrian air defenses responded late Saturday to "hostile" targets over Damascus, shooting down all incoming missiles before they reached their targets.

In June 2016, Israel launched Operation Good Neighbour to provide humanitarian aid to civilian victims of the conflict but in September a year ago, the IDF announced the operation would be closed due to the return of Mr al-Assad's government to power in the south of Syria.

An AFP correspondent in Damascus heard several large explosions before the official Sana news agency announced the defensive action.

"We were able to thwart this attack with fighter jets", Conricus said, adding that military forces near the Syrian frontier were on high alert. But Conricus said the Israeli impact was "significant".

Since the beginning of the war in Syria in 2011, Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes in Syria, a lot of them against what it says are Iranian and Hezbollah targets.

Israel has repeatedly bombed Iranian targets in neighboring Syria, but an expansion of the campaign to Iraq would mark a significant escalation in its years-long campaign against Tehran's military entrenchment across the region.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman, said Iran's Revolutionary Guards' Al Quds force, working with allied Shiite militias, had been planning to send a number of explosives-laden attack drones into Israel.

"The objective of the cell was to launch multiple attack drones on northern Israeli territory". "Our forces operate in every direction against Iranian aggression".
