Trump arrives in France today after escalating trade war with China

President Donald Trump arrived Saturday in France for an global summit with the leaders of the globe's economic powers as he confronts the consequences of his preference for going at it alone, both in a sharply divided United States and an interconnected world. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Trump highlighted the "special relationship" between the US and France.

Local Basque specialties include Espelette chili pepper, ham, dry sausage, ewe's cheese, traditional cream cake and wines. Trump declared that USA businesses with dealings in China are "hereby ordered" to begin moving home.

While on French soil, Trump also intends to raise with Macron and the other leaders the issue of a digital services tax that France has imposed on major technology companies such as Google and Facebook despite Trump's threats of retaliatory tariffs on French wine.

France has also made a point of reducing the environmental impact of the meals served at the summit.

French President Emmanuel Macron is the host of the summit, which begins Saturday and has emptied out the town famed for its beach on the last week of the summer break.

"People don't understand that yet", he said.

In an attempt to lighten the mood, Macron deployed the charms of French cuisine diplomacy, treating the U.S. leader to a surprise lunch minutes after he had arrived on Air Force One.

Trump, who arrived Saturday, and his counterparts are facing mounting anxiety over the state of the world economy and new tension on trade, Iran and Russian Federation. But he also echoed Trump's calls for Europe to do more to address the global slowdown, including by cutting taxes.

Trump, who prefers one-on-one interactions with other leaders to large gatherings, is scheduled to hold private meetings with most of the other leaders on Sunday and early Monday.

Macron was exploring holding a joint news conference with Trump at the summit's close, a French diplomatic source said, but has already decided that, to avoid another failure, there will be no final communiqué.
