Mobile partners with carriers and state attorneys general to fight robocalls

To get people to answer the phone, MacDonald said about 40 percent of the scammers resort to a tactic known as the "neighbor spoofing technique".

Infuriating and often deceptive "robocalls" by the billions prompted United States regulators to recently adopt new rules allowing carriers to implement tools to block calls with suspicious origins. The carriers will also investigate and take action against suspicious callers by notifying law enforcement and state attorneys general and working with them to trace the origins of robocalls.

A press release from Fox's office says that the principles provide a set of best practices that recognizes that no single action or technology is sufficient to curb illegal and unwanted robocalls.

Not all robocalls are illegal and institutions like banks, schools or hospitals rely on them to reach customers, but unsolicited robocalls have become a rising concern for lawmakers and federal enforcement bodies as Americans have been peppered by unwanted calls and subjected to financial fraud.

The Federal Trade Commission website explains that a robocall trying to sell you something is illegalunless a company has your written permission to call you that way. Between 2017 and 2018, the number of calls increased by 57% nationwide.

"Few things can bring together policy leaders across the political spectrum like the fight against unwanted robocalls", Pai said in a statement.

Several of the top US carriers issued statements in concert with the state attorneys general announcement.

Other companies that signed on the agreement announced on Thursday include: CenturyLink, Comcast, Frontier Communications Corporation, T-Mobile USA, Bandwidth Inc., Charter Communications, Consolidated Communications, U.S. Cellular, and Windstream Services.

The major telecommunications companies - including AT&T, Sprint and Verizon - have come together with attorneys generals of all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., to combat robocalls. "There is no silver bullet to put a stop to them, but these anti-robocall principles represent a dramatic step forward", said North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, one of the architects of this partnership.
