Gennady Golovkin and Sergiy Derevyanchenko will fight for the vacant IBF middleweight world title on October 5 at Madison Square Garden in NY.

He drew with Alvarez in 2017 and took a majority-decision loss last September.

After weeks of bitter negotiations, an agreement is in place for Gennady Golovkin and Sergiy Derevyanchenko to fight on October 5 at the Garden for the vacant IBF middleweight championship, according to ESPN.

Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KO's), 37, last fought in May, when he scored a fourth-round knockout of Steve Rolls in a 165-pound catch-weight tune-up bout.

The IBF attempted to make the fight happen a year ago after Canelo Alvarez withdrew from a slated May 2018 rematch against Golovkin after he twice tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol. One of those fights could be two-division world champion Billy Joe Saunders, who previously campaigned at middleweight, and held the WBO title. He got back in the win column with a unanimous decision win over Jack Culcay in April.

USA stocks gain on good retailer earnings
Big-box retailer Target Corp TGT8.N surged 13.4% after it beat quarterly same-store sales and profit estimates. The strong earnings came as yields on the 10-year US Treasury note pushed higher after faltering yesterday.

The former unified champion is hoping to regain the IBF title after being stripped last June for failing to agree terms for a defence against Ukrainian Derevyanchenko.

Jacobs then lost the belt to Alvarez in May in their unification fight, and Alvarez was stripped on August 1 for failing to make a deal to face Derevyanchenko, who had reclaimed the mandatory position.

Alvarez had refused to face Golovkin for the third time, despite heavy pressure from DAZN, which reluctantly approved Derevyanchenko as Golovkin's fall opponent. "Sergiy came very close to fulfilling his dream previous year, and I truly believe that his time is now against GGG, one of the best middleweights of this era".

"Very brutal negotiations as they fought over every single little thing possible down to the number of hotel rooms for Derev team", Rafael said on Twitter. The IBF stripped him of it after Alvarez and Derevyanchenko, the mandatory challenger, failed to set up a title defense. The October 5th date has been privately reserved by DAZN for Madison Square Garden for several weeks, while they have tried to secure a worthy main event.
