USA urges India to free detainees, restore rights in Kashmir

Briefing the Senate Committee on Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs on Wednesday, the FO spokesperson said, "The Kashmiri people are in danger in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK)".

Trump added he would speak to the Indian prime minister regarding the issue in occupied Kashmir over the weekend at the G7 summit in France.

The Indian action to cancel the special status for the country's only Muslim-majority state was accompanied by a wide-ranging curfew and communications blackout, cutting off millions of Kashmiris from the rest of the world. Pakistan also said its forces later killed six Indian soldiers.

Kashmir - which both countries claim in full but rule in part - has been the site of decades of sporadic conflict.
