Stephen Curry sponsoring new golf program at Howard University

Steph Curry announced Monday that he is partnering with the historically black university to fund the first six years of a new NCAA Division I golf team.

Ferguson had been campaigning to establish a golf team at Howard.

"Howard University is honored to partner with National Basketball Association champion Stephen Curry to launch what is sure to become one of the best golf programs in the country", Howard University president Wayne A.I. Frederick said.

Howard athletic director Kery Davis said Curry's donation "was sort of a jolt for us".

Howard University is an HBCU and participates in sports in the MEAC, which sponsors men's golf but not women's.

The Bison plan to a debut for the men's and women's golf teams in the 2020-21 academic year.

The school had a Division II golf program in the past, along with intercollegiate and intramural club teams.

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is helping finance the creation of competitive golf at Howard University. Curry participates in numerous charity golf tournaments, has played golf with President Barack Obama, and is now giving back to the sport.

Curry, who often plays in celebrity golf events, played on his high school golf team.

As he goes into his third year with the Hawks, Schlenk has totally overhauled the roster and assembled an impressive core of young players through the draft, including Trae Young, John Collins and incoming first-round picks De'Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish.

Curry is using his connections at Under Armour, Callaway, Eat.

"It's incredible", Ferguson said Monday, "to have one of my dreams come true", as Curry said, it was "tough" to hear about students "who have the talent but don't have a fair shot at the game".

Stephen made the announcement on Monday (August 19) at the historic Langston Golf Course in Washington, DC.
