Donald Trump: Jews who vote for Democrats show ‘great disloyalty’

Under pressure from Mr Trump, Israel last week blocked Ms Omar and Ms Tlaib from entering the country.

The president has repeatedly accused Democratic representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib of anti-Semitism.

"This is predicated on them being an important ally in the region and the only democracy in the Middle East".

Speaking at a press conference about two Democratic congresswomen who were barred from Israel and Palestine, he said he "couldn't believe" there was any discussion of cutting off aid to Israel after the country refused entry to Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who is of Palestinian descent.

Trump, who recently encouraged Israel to block Tlaib's visit to see her family in the occupied territories, lashed out after the congresswomen criticized Benjamin Netanyahu's government for denying them entry, vowing that the Israeli leader would not "succeed in hiding the cruel reality of the occupation from us".

"My message to Trump: I am a proud Jewish person and I have no concerns about voting Democratic", Senator Bernie Sanders, a leading candidate in the 2020 Democratic presidential race and an independent, said in a Twitter post late on Tuesday. "If she really wanted to go see her grandmother she would have gone", the Republican congressman continued. They have compared boycotting Israel to boycotting the Nazis.

The head of a predominantly Arab Israeli political party on Wednesday became the first party leader in Israel to condemn Donald Trump after the United States president accused Jews who support Democrats of "great disloyalty". Trump called Omar a "disaster" for Jews and said he didn't "buy" the tears that Tlaib shed Monday as she discussed the situation.

Trump's characterization was roundly condemned by US Jewish groups that accused the US president of employing a unsafe anti-Semitic trope, but faced little backlash in Israel.

U.S. Jewish group, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) said it was outraged by Trump's comments.

Regardless of his motivation, Trump reminded the Jews that have forgotten, they have an obligation to protect their own - and he said it in a nice way.

Trump blasted out the praise after critics decried the president for weaponizing anti-Semitism and exercising the offensive trope that questions the loyalty of Jewish citizens. Trump understands basic Jewish history. It included no meetings with Israeli officials but only those from the Palestinian Authority.

She went on to describe Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's decision to issue the ban as "unprecedented" because it was against USA congresswomen, adding that such bans are regularly issued against Palestinians.

Ann Lewis and Mark Mellman of Democratic Majority for Israel called it "one of the most risky, deadly accusations Jews have faced over the years".

A Pew Research Center poll conducted in April found that among Jewish Americans, 42% said Trump is favoring the Israelis too much, 6% said he's favoring the Palestinians too much and 47% said he's striking the right balance.
