Phil Mickelson nearly misses tee time after hotel 'struck by lightning'

Phil Mickelson should have be getting ready to head to the BMW Championship for tee time, but instead was anxious he would be late due to unforeseen circumstances.

Phil Mickelson endured a freakish build-up to the final round of the BMW Championship after being evacuated from his hotel.

Like Mickelson, J.T. Poston is staying this week at the Eaglewood Resort & Spa, which sits less than a mile from tournament host Medinah Country Club.

Mickelson arrived on wheels, but only after fretting he would not be able to return to his room to collect his clubs following the mandatory evacuation.

As he explained in his Twitter feed, his hotel was struck by lightning and caught on fire, forcing him to leave his belongings in his room. I'm going to make it. Turns out my clubs acted as a fire retardant.

Neither Mickelson nor Poston was in contention starting the final round.

Intrepid five-time major champions Mickelson, however, confirmed later he would make his 11:52 (4.52pm Irish) time at Medinah.

Golfer Phil Mickelson had an electrifying Sunday, and that was before he even stepped on the course.

He only had time to swing a weighted club in the parking lot, then to hit a few drivers and chips on the range before heading to the course.

"But things cleared up pretty quickly", he said. I got in my vehicle and left and couldn't get back. "I'm looking forward to having a couple months off and kind of regrouping and come back fresh". "Lucky me." Mickelson, who tees off at 1152 Eastern time (1652 GMT), needs more than just luck on the course to reach next week's Tour Championship by finishing in the top 30 of the season's points standings.

By the end of the day, Mickelson said everything worked out fine "except for my score".
