The prize is given by Federation Internationale de Football Association to the best goal of the year and this year's candidates include ever-present Lionel Messi, previous victor Zlatan Ibrahimovic and some lesser known names such as Billie Simpson of Northern Ireland Premiership side Cliftonville Ladies.

Messi was put up for the award after his sensational chip vs Real Betis.

Mohammed Salah won the Puskas Award, which is handed to the player with the best goal of a given season, in 2018.

Prolific Sampdoria frontman Fabio Quagliarella is another who displayed lightning-fast reflexes to flick a low cross through his own legs and into the bottom corner.

The first woman named in this year's selection is Cameroon's Ajara Nchout for her outstanding goal against New Zealand in this summer's World Cup.
