Roger Federer crashes out to qualifier Andrey Rublev in Cincinnati

Roger Federer suffered his earliest exit at Cincinnati in 11 years going out to qualifier Andrey Rublev rather routinely 6-3, 6-4 in the third round.

Rublev, who won by 6-3, 6-4 over the third seeded Swiss, will face fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev, the ninth seed, for a place in the semifinals.

I've already stated that I think he's the most realistic challenger to the elite three at the US Open in just over a week's time, and it will also be interesting to see how Rublev copes with the comedown following the biggest win of his career against Federer last night.

As for the Cincinnati Masters, Djokovic has moved to -200 to win the title after he plays Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the quarter-finals on Friday. "Defense, offense, serving well", Federer said of his opponent after the match. He didn't give me anything. The Serbian player said: "It was probably a combination of things, between the experience of playing big matches on big courts against top guys, and then really believing that you can do it, that you can beat those guys, and get one or two scalps that gets you going. I don't know. I mean, the way even how he (Roger Federer) finished the match, it was so fantastic", said Rublev.

This was the 21-year-old's second top-five win in five months. The Spaniard played well, but Djokovic, the last remaining Masters champion in the field, was the better man.

Computer issues for US Customs lead to long lines at some airports
A government official says there's no indication that this was a malicious attack on the network "at this time". CBP tweeted about it, calling it a "temporary outage with its processing systems at various airports of entry".

Defending champion Djokovic will continue his quest in a Friday quarter-final, taking on France's Lucas Pouille, a 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, 6-2 victor over Russian Karen Khachanov. They actually met last week in Canada as well, with Gasquet priced similarly before losing 7-5 7-5 although that doesn't necessarily paint an accurate picture of how the match played out.

Djokovic won 12 straight points during the opening set, including breaking serve in the sixth game with a forehand pass at the net. "I worked very hard coming into Cincinnati in that little season we had since Wimbledon".

Roberto Bautista Agut, the Spanish 11th seed, needed just an hour to thrash Miomir Kecmanovic 6-1 6-2.

A semifinalist a year ago, David Goffin will try to get back to that stage against qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka.
