U.S. Customs Computers Crash at Airports Nationwide, Causing Major Travel Delays

Officials from both Los Angeles' LAX and New York's JFK confirmed Friday afternoon that airports across the country are facing slowdowns due to a computer glitch in US Customs' systems.

Customs officers at Dulles International Airport near Washington haven't been able to process passengers arriving from outside the USA since 3:18 p.m. local time, said Micah Lillard, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection office said officials are working to address the situation while officers are using "alternative procedures until systems are back online".

Travellers at airports around the country, including New York's JFK and Washington-Dulles, reported widespread delays in global arrivals halls.

Shortly after 6 p.m. ET, the airport tweeted that systems are slowly getting back to normal and officers have processed the majority of waiting passengers at LAX with no significant impacts to flights.

Newark Airport was also experiencing problems that was impacting their B and C Terminals, according to their Twitter.

A similar outage occurred in 2017, causing hours-long waits and significant delays nationwide.

"People are being processed, but slower", the airport told a Twitter user who posted a photo of a long line of passengers.

They advised passengers to check their flight status.
