However, a few hours after Deri's announcement, and after signing a letter promising to "respect any restrictions", Tlaib changed her mind and tweeted that she won't visit the West Bank after all, citing "oppressive conditions".

"Let's be clear: the goal of our trip was to witness firsthand what is happening on the ground in Palestine and hear from stakeholders -our job as Members of Congress".

On Thursday, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, prodded by President Donald Trump, said he won't allow Tlaib and Omar to enter.

"I approved her request as a gesture of good will on a humanitarian basis, but it was just a provocative request aimed at bashing the State of Israel", he continued.

She says they were going to get briefings on the impact of Israeli settlements on Bedouins in east Jerusalem, a United Nations briefing on the effects of USA humanitarian aid cuts, hold a video conference with Gaza youth and tour the West Bank city of Hebron with Israeli military veterans.

The Israeli government claims the movement could "delegitimize" the country.

However, following Israel's decision to bar the duo, Tlaib followed up with a special humanitarian request to gain entry into the country in order to see her grandmother who lives in the West Bank. It's the latest episode in the country's serial moves to stifle leftwing dissidents, including holding Simone Zimmerman, founder of IfNotNow, at the border; detaining the journalist Peter Beinart in Ben Gurion airport; and denying an entry visa to the BDS advocate Ariel Gold.
