NZ police hunt man who killed Aust surfer

An Australian man is dead and his horrified Canadian partner sprinted kilometres in search of help, after a terrifying alleged robbery in New Zealand over a campervan.

Police are still examining the scene of the shooting.

'They're young. They're still at that great age where that reckless temperance of youth hasn't come into line with the responsibilities of adulthood and it never will for Sean now, ' Emmeline said.

Police say they are now working to notify his family.

"At this stage police are following up on a number of leads, but they are yet to get any information on a strong lead and they're still appealing to the public for any further information on this man", she said.

Colin Chung from Colin's Cafe at nearby Whale Bay told AAP the area is a rocky coastline and provided some of the best surf in New Zealand, but it is off the beaten track for tourists.

Police identified the man who was killed as 33-year-old Sean McKinnon.

Emmeline, who works in law enforcement in Australia, said Sean looked the most like his father and the family didn't know how his death would effect their mother, who remained in Australia.

Mr McKinnon often detailed his love of camping and travelling on his social media accounts.

One lone male is being sought in connection to the "random attack", Pitkethley said, according to The Australian.

"The Waikato is still a relatively safe destination and our hearts go out to the victim's family and his Canadian fiancee".

A video shows posted on his fiancé's Facebook page in mid-July shows her surfing with friends in Piha, a seaside village west of Auckland.

This type of thing, he said, presents a huge issue for police.

"Police believe the vehicle, a White 2017 Toyota Hiace ZL registration KWF362, travelled from Whaanga Road to Gordonton Road this morning", they said.

"Police confirmed that at around 2am a man approached the van ..."

Hamilton police were earlier spotted firing multiple shots at a green hatchback in the auto park at the Gallagher Hockey Turf, a 20 minute drive from where the campervan was found.

NZ Police update media on the incident.

A homicide investigation into the campervan shooting is ongoing.
