North Korea launches 2 'projectiles,' vows to end talks with South Korea

South Korea plans to remove Japan around September from its list of 29 nations that have an expedited application process for exports, placing it in a newly created category.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff alerted reporters to the launches hours after the North issued a statement berating South Korea, saying it's "senseless" for Seoul to hope for a resumption of inter-Korean dialogue while it continues its military exercises with the United States. It has also fired several short-range missiles in recent weeks.

Japan's Defense Ministry said the North Korean projectiles did not reach the country's territorial waters or its exclusive economic zone.

The North is banned from ballistic missile launches under UN Security Council resolutions.

At no point after the last six short-range missile tests has the USA strongly condemned the testing of missiles which could threaten its ally.

Russian seismologists have not registered any strong seismic events in the Sea of Japan in the wake of the reported projectile launches by North Korea, a spokesperson of the Vladivostok centre of the Russian Tsunami Warning Service told Sputnik on Friday.

The North, which had halted missile tests since November 2017, began launching projectile weapons, including short-range ballistic missiles, from May 4. Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have met three times since April past year pledging peace and cooperation but little progress has been made to improve dialogue and strengthen exchange and cooperation.

The loss of dialogue momentum between the North and South and the stalemate in implementing pledges made at a historic summit between their two leaders past year was entirely the responsibility of the South, a North Korean spokesman said.

"If Japan chooses the path of dialogue and cooperation, we will gladly join hands", Moon said in a speech to mark the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan's 1910-45 rule.

The North had recently said it would talk only with Washington and not Seoul, and that inter-Korean dialogue won't resume unless the South offers a "plausible excuse" on why it keeps hosting military drills with the United States.

The United States has so far rejected North Korea's demands for sanctions relief in exchange for piecemeal deals toward partially surrendering its nuclear capabilities and urged Pyongyang to commit to completely relinquishing its nuclear and missile program.

The launches "clearly verified the reliability, security and actual war capacity" of the weapon, KCNA said, echoing analysts who said the launches showed North Korea's confidence in its missile technology.

President Donald Trump dismissed North Korea's missile test.

But Pyongyang's message was clear: Moon has no right to talk about peace while conducting military exercises.

Those two parties claimed that such actions will not be good for the two Koreas, and they urged the North to return to dialogue for peace. The spokesman left open the possibility of talks with the United States, speaking of upcoming dialogue between the two countries but warned it will have no place for the South.

Trump and Kim have met twice since their first summit in Singapore previous year and said their countries will continue talks, but little progress has been made on the North's stated commitment to denuclearise.
