A look at rallies, recent tension in Portland

"Hopefully the Mayor will be able to properly do his job!", Trump tweeted, adding that "Major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an "ORGANIZATION OF TERROR".

The most recent high-profile clash was on June 29 when three people were arrested and eight people injured, including at least three police officers, during violent demonstrations that included anti-fascist groups and members of right-wing organizations including the Proud Boys, CNN affiliates KOIN and KATU reported.

Portland police declared a riot and arrested four people.

"But we don't care about who you are or your politics are".

Biggs is known for his extreme rhetoric against Antifa members, the often black-clad left-wingers who maintain they are fighting fascism and often crash far-right events.

As Portland, Oregon braces for dueling protests between Antifa and far-right activists, Mayor Ted Wheeler says law enforcement is ready to respond.

Self-described anti-fascists had vowed to confront the rally while leaders from the far right urged their followers to turn out in large numbers to protest the arrests of six members of right-wing groups in the run-up to the event.

"Antifa" is a collective term for a loose affiliation of anti-fascist groups.

Joey Gibson of the ultra-nationalist group Patriot Prayer, who is not involved in this weekend's event but organised similar rallies in 2017 and 2018 that erupted in clashes, surrendered on Friday for felony rioting. He was at a confrontation that broke out on May 1 outside a bar where members of the so-called "antifa" movement had gathered after a May Day demonstration.

Members of far-right groups, including Oathkeepers and the Proud Boys, plan to rally in Portland Saturday.

The get-ups appeared in the spirit of "Keep Portland Weird", the unofficial slogan of this quirky city of food carts, artisan doughnuts and naked bicycle rides.

'We receive criticism no matter what.

Hate group watchdogs say the Daily Stormers, a neo-Nazi group, is expected at the rally.

Police Chief Outlaw said: "We don't condone this".

More than two dozen local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are in Portland, Oregon, to help police with a right-wing rally Saturday that's expected to draw demonstrators from around the U.S.

"That group of Antifa there in Portland needs to be exposed for who they are", Biggs told the Associated Press Tuesday.

"They want you to not show up in Portland, they want to put fear in your hearts", Gibson said. A right-wing group called the Oath Keepers said it would not participate Saturday because organizers had not done enough to discourage white supremacists from showing up.

Gibson's attorney, Multnomah county Republican chair James Buchal, said in a statement the charges were "part and parcel of the dishonest campaign by Portland leaders to blame out-of-town demonstrators for violence that began and persists because antifa wants to shut down any rightwing demonstrations in Portland".

Beginning as early as 4 am on Saturday, August 17, the Hawthorne Bridge will be "closed in both directions to vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic" for an "undetermined amount of time".
