Liverpool and referee Frappart win the plaudits at Super Cup final

Chelsea didn't win the UEFA Super Cup, but it will have a lot to fell good about.

The 32-year-old was released by West Ham United at the end of last season but handed a Premier League lifeline last week by Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp who drafted him as back-up to Brazilian first-choice Alisson Becker.

Liverpool players mob goalkeeper Adrian after he saved a penalty to give the side victory in the UEFA Super Cup match in Istanbul on 14 August 2019.

Mane fired Liverpool ahead five minutes into the additional 30 to put Jurgen Klopp's side in the ascendancy for all of six minutes, before Jorginho converted from the penalty spot to put Chelsea level, after Adrian had fouled Tammy Abraham in the area.

Adrian revealed he had tried to pull out of the challenge on Abraham which led to the penalty for Chelsea's second equaliser during extra time.

A season of warming the bench, with perhaps some Cup appearances awaited but in Liverpool's opening Premier League game against Norwich City on Friday, Alisson suffered a calf injury and Adrian was thrust into action at Anfield.

"I told the refereeing team after the game that if we would have played like they whistled, we would have won 6-0", Klopp said.

"He's not only on the pitch a great person, he showed me already that he's a proper personality in the dressing room as well".

"I said before the game that anything can happen in a final and in the end the penalties decided the game".

"He played an incredible game, he had sensational saves", the manager said.

"I don't know where Adrian was two weeks ago when we played City".

Adrian told BT Sport: "Welcome to Liverpool".

"I'm just happy for him that he's fit, he's playing again, he's playing at a high level and we just keep improving".

"I didn't know in that moment that Liverpool would come to me and call me saying "Adrian, come on, come to us because (Simon) Mignolet has an offer" and they let him go".

He poked the ball past the advancing Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and Sadio Mane tapped into the unguarded goal to make it 1-1 in the 49th minute.

"In penalty shootouts you're always lucky but his performance over 120 minutes was incredible, making the save from the penalty was the icing on the cake", said Klopp.
