Floods in Kerala, India, Destroy Homes

Heavy rain and landslides ravaged the state of Kerala, the worst-hit area, where the death toll rose to at least 57 over the weekend, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Almost 150 people have died and more than 400,000 people have been forced to flee their homes following days of torrential rain that triggered catastrophic flooding and mudslides in southern India.

Around 288,000 people across the state's worst-affected districts including Wayanad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode have been moved to relief camps. A total of 4,08,322 people have been rescued from the district and evacuated to safer places, the data showed.As many as 1,224 relief camps are now operational in the state with 3,93,956 people taking shelter in them, while 372 medical teams have been deployed.

Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP from Wayanad, has assured all help to the people of his flood-hit constituency rebuild their lives.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a "cloudy sky with a few spells of rain or thundershowers" for the next five days in the state.

Due to the strengthening of low pressure in Bay of Bengal, extremely heavy rains are expected to lash the several parts of the state, director of IMD, Thiruvananthapuram, K. Santosh said.

The Indian Air Force rescued almost 125 people stranded on a road washed away by floods in Kutch on Monday, unidentified government officials said.

In the national capital, it was a sultry day on Monday, with light rains in the afternoon. Usually, there is 550.8 mm of rainfall during this period.
