Verizon announces sale of Tumblr to Automattic, the owner of WordPress

U.S. telecommunications company Verizon is selling its ownership of Tumblr over to Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Unfortunately, terms of the deal haven't been disclosed yet, so we have no idea how much Automattic will pay for the acquisition, nor when the deal will close.

The service was originally owned by Yahoo, and it was later purchased by Verizon for a whopping $1 billion in 2017.

Verizon also said it was seeking the right buyer, and chose Automatic, believing the pairing could inject new energy into Tumblr.

Verizon Media CEO Guru Gowrappan called Automattic "the ideal partner" for Tumblr, saying that the buyer's "expertise and track record will unlock new and exciting possibilities for Tumblr and its users".

Blogging platform Tumblr is, yet again, getting a new owner. The company is reportedly taking on all of Tumblr's 200 employees, and the purchase price of the company was undisclosed - though Axios pegs it as below $10 million. Automattic will carry on with the porn ban on Tumblr after the acquisition.

'Tumblr is one of the Web's most iconic brands, ' said Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg in a statement released Monday.

"Automattic shares our vision to build passionate communities around shared interests and to democratize publishing so that anyone with a story can tell it, especially when they come from under-heard voices and marginalized communities", Tumblr's staff added.

In the underlying technology of our platforms, I think there are some good opportunities to standardize on the Open Source WordPress tech stack, but the front-end user experience on Tumblr will evolve on its own path.
