Six candidates shortlisted for Team India’s head coach position

After over 2000 applications, BCCI has shortlisted six candidates for the post of the Indian men's cricket team head coach.

All the six short-listed candidates - Mike Hesson, Tom Moody, Robin Singh, Lalchand Rajput, Phil Simmons, and Ravi Shastri - have already been informed about the interview date and time.

The shortlisted candidates will give a presentation to the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) headed by the legendary Kapil Dev and comprise of Anshuman Gaekwad and former women's team captain Shantha Rangaswamy before making the final decidion by end of this week. He scored 3,830 runs in Tests at 35.79 with 11 centuries, and also took 151 wickets.

The Indian Cricket Team were knocked out of their second consecutive Cricket World Cup during the semi-final stage.

He was appointed as head coach of the team replacing Anil Kumble in 2017 by the previous CAC.

Overall, Shastri's performance as the coach of India can be termed good and not to forget, Indian skipper Virat Kohli also shares a good rapport with him.

Lalchand Rajput has also represented India for a brief period between 1985 to 1987.

In 2016, he was appointed as the head coach of the Afghanistan national side, and saw the team become an ICC full member under his tenure.

Singh played 136 ODIs and a lone Test for India.

Since his retirement from all forms of cricket in 2004, the former India all-rounder has been extensively involved in coaching. In 2006, Robin was named as the coach of the India A cricket team before serving as the fielding coach of the national side from 2007 to 2009.

Shasti's tenure as head coach has produced mixed results as the team lost away Test series against South Africa and England, but won a series in Australia for the first time. He coached the West Indies to ICC World T20 glory in 2016, before being appointed head coach of Afghanistan in 2017. He has earlier coached Sri Lanka and has experience in Indian cricket as he was the head coach of Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

The 44-year-old was described by former captain Brendon McCullum as "the best coach the Black Caps have ever had" - guided the team to new heights across all three formats. Hesson is a popular coach and was instrumental in ushering a positive change in New Zealand cricket before and after the 2015 World Cup. Apart from his work with Western Australia and Worcestershire at the domestic level, he has the experience of coaching and managing teams in six different countries. Besides this, he had also covered some Australian Test matches, ODI Cricket and the Big Bash League as a commentator.

The former West Indies all-rounder played global cricket between 1987 and 1999. Besides this, Simmons also played in 207 first-class matches and 306 List A games.

One of the dark horses in this race, former West Indies opener, Phil Simmons was the head coach of Afghanistan in the just-concluded World Cup.
