Serena´s US Open plans in disarray as injury hands Andreescu Toronto crown

Andreescu broke early in the first set to lead 2-1 and then consolidated the break after an unforced error from Williams. I just can´t play today. "I tried but I just couldn't do it", an emotional Williams was quoted as saying by wwos.

The 19-year-old Canadian heroine, who took down No. 8 seed Serena Williams to lift the trophy, said "Thanks, but no thanks to any extra exertion in the US Open run-up".

Andreescu led 3-1 in the first set when Williams, a three-time victor in Canada, called the trainer out.

Andreescu said: "Serena you made me cry a bunch over there". She also has dealt with knee issues this season, which has resulted in zero tournament victories.

"This isn't the way I expected to win or for [Serena] to go off the court, but [Serena] is truly a champion on and off the court", Andreescu told reporters. You are truly a champion. I haven't played many matches in the past 18 months, really.

"I'm speechless right now". It's a dream come true.

Williams has been battling a few injuries for the past two years.

Clad Gunman In Shooting At Mosque, One Injured
A judge is expected to rule later in the day on the police request to formally detain him, the Oslo District Court said. As the gunman targeted Muslims in the mosque, a 65-year-old man named Mohammed Rafiq managed to overpower the shooter.

She immediately went to comfort a teared-up Williams, who Andreescu counts as one of her idols.

After Williams addressed the crowd, Andreescu took time to praise the tennis professional and those in attendance at the match.

On the men's side, Milos Raonic retired after two sets against Felix Auger-Aliassime in a much-anticipated all-Canadian matchup.

It was certainly not the way Andreescu, who was winning at the time Williams ended the match, wanted to win the 2019 Rogers Cup Finals.

The 19-year-old Andreescu, from nearby Mississauga, has victories over seven of the top 10 players in the world.

Having lived in the rankings nether regions as world No. 209 just 12 months ago, Andreescu rose all the way to world No. 14 on Monday, by far her highest career ranking and a coronation following months of uncertainty due to injury. "She's a teenager and her ability to fight through injuries and really fight even when the match isn't going her way to come out and still win. This is just a minor setback for a major comeback", Andreescu said. I tried, but I couldn't.

There has not been a home victor of the event, which first took place in 1892, since Faye Urban defeated Vicki Berner in an all-Canadian final in 1969.
