Man who stabbed woman in Sydney CBD taken into custody

The body was discovered in an apartment in Clarence St.

"He was fearless. He was completely fearless", he said, adding that he had "a big scary knife" in his hand.

Police are investigating whether the attacker, believed to be Mert Nay, from Blacktown, had escaped from a mental institution.

Nine News is also reporting another woman has been injured. It has been reported that he had escaped from a mental health facility in recent days, but this has not been confirmed.

NSW Police Superintendent Gavin Wood, speaking to reporters near the scene, said: "A number of members of the public actually physically restrained the offender. Those attempts, thankfully, were unsuccessful".

Supt Wood said it appeared Tuesday's attack was unprovoked and the man had acted alone.

Police and witnesses say they heard the suspect yelling "Allahu akbar", or "God is great".

He praised those who had intervened in the "extremely unsafe and hostile" situation, saying their actions had helped capture the man.

"They were fearless. significantly courageous people", he said.

"To approach a person with [this] mindset. with clear evidence of a stabbing previously, these people are heroes".

Police are now searching his home.

According to police, the man behind this "terrifying carnage" had information related to terrorism ideology on him during the attack.

NSW Police gave an evening update on Tuesday's CBD incident, where one woman was stabbed in the back and another woman was found dead in a nearby building. "The attacker is now in police custody following the fearless actions of those who were present at the scene and were able to able to restrain him".

A man wielding a wooden chair could be seen in the footage confronting the crazed man.

"The male offender produced a knife and has stabbed a member of the public, and subsequently there were a number of attempted stabbings", police told The Australian. When the vehicle shot forward, the man fell off, and that is when several other men surrounded him. He is now under arrest.

"Seconds later he was just piled on by quite a few people".

We heard a massive commotion outside and I looked outside and I could hear a man chanting.

Police are yet to confirm the reports of a stabbing.

The three friends, who all work at a recruitment agency in the city, helped tackle the man alongside an Australian colleague.
