Fingerprint verification rolling out to a number of Google websites on Android

While the Pixels will get this new feature today, over the next few days it will be pushed out to Android devices running Android 7 Nougat and higher.

The feature will continue to work for those who have two-factor authentication enabled on their account, by the way. It essentially replaces traditional passwords for more secure and convenient alternatives, including fingerprint scans and facial recognition.

The different building blocks which contributed to Google's announcement today have been rolling together for some time. However, the tech giant is keen on simplifying online logins by making it easier, and quicker, to securely access some of its own web services on Android devices without the need for a password. This week, though, all phones with Android Nougat+ (and a fingerprint reader) will have access. And if you're anxious about having your fingerprint sent who knows where online, don't be. If you're interested in giving this a try, head on over to https://passwords.google.com, pick a site to add a password on and follow the instructions to verify yourself signing on. Rather than being asked for login credentials like username and password, the site can authenticate those details based on information stored on-device, requiring just a tap of your digit to a fingerprint reader (or your lockscreen authentication details) to log in. And you can test out how well this new system works by running a little test on your Android device. Let's say you have an Android phone with a screen lock of some kind, be it fingerprint, PIN, swipe pattern, etc.

According to a support page on the company's website, Android users can now use their smartphone's screen lock sign-in interface to verify their identity when logging in to Google services on another device. FIDO2 is much more secure than regular passwords.
