Floods brought by heavy rains and overflowing rivers across large swathes of western and southern India have killed at least 33 people and forced the evacuation of 180,000 from their homes, officials said on Thursday.

In the latest flooding, several dozen people were feared to have been trapped after landslides in Wayanad and Malappuram districts.

Around 22 people have lost their lives in the Kerala floods and more than 22,000 have been evacuated.

Maharashtra received 782 mm of rain between June to August, 109 percent of the average rainfall in this period, he said.
