Rogers Cup: Serena Williams beats Elise Mertens in straight sets

Andreescu, competing in just her fourth match since May, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup on Thursday by edging world No. 5 Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 in dramatic fashion on centre court.

Elsewhere, defending champion and fourth seed Simona Halep beat American Jennifer Brady 4-6 7-5 7-6 (7-5) while sixth seed Elina Svitolina - victor in 2017 - defeated Katerina Siniakova 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Austrian second seed Thiem, who had knocked out home hope Denis Shapovalov on Wednesday, faced two break points in the final game against 2014 US Open victor Cilic before securing victory on a third match point.

After starting the match as storm clouds gathered above Centre Court - and waiting out rain that delayed the proceedings for more than an hour - Andreescu cruised in the opening set.

Karolina Pliskova kept the pressure on Naomi Osaka in the battle to take the world number one ranking by reaching the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Toronto on Thursday. And I was practicing quite a lot, but still matches is different.

That defeat certainly counts as an aberration in the way she has played this season.

"Being off for that long and coming into the Rogers Cup and getting into the quarterfinals means so much to me", the 19-year-old Andreescu said.

Alexandrova staved off 12 break points, but she was broken five times and had 11 double-faults.

Huawei's EMUI 10 set to drop this week
According to a new report published by a reliable source, Huawei may reveal its custom Hongmeng OS in the following days. Robust domestic demand for Huawei's smartphones has pushed up the company's revenue in the first half this year by 23%.

"It feels more like I am showcasing my skills to her like 'look what I can do.' So I will go into the match with that mentality".

The Japanese made a quick start to the second set and seemed in control until Swiatek made a comeback, the 18-year-old winning over the crowd with her versatile play as the match wore on.

"This is a pretty damn good performance I've been putting up right now", Andreescu said. I was really, really pissed.

The Mississauga, Ont., native had played almost five hours of tennis over the first two days of the tournament, needing three sets to defeat Daria Kasatkina on Wednesday night, and three against fellow Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the first round Tuesday. "So I guess it's going to get better every day with what I play".

Andreescu praised Pliskova's serve, and said facing Bertens was a good warmup to her quarterfinal matchup. "You know, playing tennis for a living is the most unbelievable thing, and I feel so blessed and lucky in my life".

Among the other players advancing were Ukrainian sixth seed and 2017 champion Elina Svitolina, Ukrainian teenager Dayana Yastremska, Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, Canadian Bianca Andreescu and Swiss Belinda Bencic.

French Open champion Ashleigh Barty's stint as the world's top-ranked player ended after she was knocked out on Tuesday.

Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, the 2017 Rogers Cup victor, moved onto the third round with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Katerina Siniakova, and 2015 champion Belinda Bencic of Switzerland edged Julia Goerges 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
