4.6 quake rattles NE Taiwan

One woman has been killed as a result of a powerful 6.4 magnitude natural disaster that struck off the coast of Taiwan on Thursday, the island's fire department said.

About 33,000 soldiers, among them marines and special forces, and more than 4,200 military vehicles and equipment, including Amphibious Assault Vehicles, rubber boats, generators and water pumps, are either on standby or already in those areas expected to be hit hardest.

Lekima was carrying maximum winds of 227 km per hour (141 mph) as it approaches Taiwan, the weather bureau said.

"An quake struck when we are making preparations for the typhoon, which is a rare event", premier Su Tseng-chang told a meeting at a national emergency centre, urging officials to stay on alert for its approach.

No deaths have been reported, but more than 1,000 families were left without electricity in northern Taiwan.

Most, if not all, of that business is believed to have been concentrated during the peak delivery season. FedEx also signed up more dropoff and pickup points, and is even testing a ground delivery robot.

Today's natural disaster off the northeast coast prompted warnings of landslides as the weather bureau forecast rainfall of up to 900mm in Taiwan's northern mountains.

A 5.9-MAGNITUDE quake that rattled Taiwan today killed one woman and caused temporary power outages that affected over 10,000 homes, authorities said.

The eye of the storm is forecast to skirt northeastern Taiwan as it moves northward between late Thursday night and Friday, when the typhoon will be closest to Taiwan, the CWB said, expecting extremely heavy rain in western and northeastern areas.

It's also frequently hit by Pacific typhoons.

Typhoon Morakot devastated the island in 2009, killing almost 700 people, majority in landslides.
