Missing British Scientist Found Dead In Greece

The search for missing British Cypriot astrophysicist Natalie Christopher continues for a third day on Wednesday in Ikaria, as Cyprus offered to dispatch a crew to assist the effort.

The couple was staying at a hotel near the village of Kerame and had been due to fly to Cyprus via Athens on Monday evening.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances of her disappearance.

On Tuesday afternoon, police discovered a bloody tissue in the bathroom at the hotel room the couple was staying and then discovered three bloodstains on a pillow the 35-year-old had been using, Greek news outlet Skai reported.

He contacted her and she informed him she had gone jogging.

There were also blood spots in front of a mirror, according to the owner of the hotel, quoted by Greek media.

The U.K. Foreign Office issued a statement confirming it is now "assisting the family of a British woman reported missing in Ikaria, and are in contact with the Greek authorities who are conducting the search for her". Her partner told police that he spoke with her over the phone around 10 a.m., and later reported her absence around noon when she still was not back, Chronopoulos tells TIME.

On Sunday, hours before she went missing, Christopher posted images on Facebook of her holiday on the island. An Oxford graduate, she is a researcher at the European University Cyprus. The area of Ikaria where she was reportedly running has paths along steep sea cliffs. Authorities have said they are keeping all lines of inquiry open.

"I express the honest condolences of the Cypriot state and of myself to the family and friends of Natalie Christopher", Cypriot Justice and Public Order Minister George Savvides said after being informed that the body had been identified. A 27-year-old local man has been charged with rape and murder in Eaton's death.
