It is is the latest outbreak - the second-largest ever- and is affecting two provinces in the country, North Kivu and Ituri.

His decision follows the declaration by the World Health Organization of the outbreak being a public health emergency of global concern.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) said in a press release on Wednesday that it is providing more than $38 million in additional funding to help end the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Ebola response in the DR Congo has faced several challenges, including a lack of trust in the government and attacks on treatment centres by unidentified assailants.

Before his resignation, the minister was stripped of his responsibility after President Félix Tshisekedi made a decision to replace him as the head of the Ebola response team.

"Given the relatively robust surveillance and infection prevention and control practices in Jamaica, the public can be reassured that the current emergency response arrangements are in place to enable an appropriate response in the event of the introduction of the ebola virus disease into the country", Tufton said.

Islamist rebels killed twelve people in two attacks in an area of east Congo that is struggling to contain an Ebola epidemic, local authorities said on Tuesday.

Though the disease has yet to spread beyond the DRC, its risk of doing so is high, especially as cases have begun to crop up in Goma, near the border with Rwanda.

The UN health agency declares an emergency when a public health event, such as an outbreak, becomes extraordinary because it constitutes a risk to other countries, and when a coordinated global response is required.

The DRC, since August previous year, has been witnessing an outbreak of Ebola.

An Ebola epidemic devastated components of West Africa from 2014 to 2016 and killed more than 11,000 individuals.

According to World Health Organization, the vaccine is 97 per cent effective and more than 161,000 people have been given.

And, the Ebola virus spreads to people through direct contact with bodily fluids of a person who is sick with or has died from EVD.

However, not everyone is vaccinated as there are conspiracy theories about the vaccine.
