NASA Prepares to Send ‘First Woman and Next Man’ on Moon

"Chasing the Moon: the People, the Politics, and the Promise that Launched America into the Space Age" by Robert Stone and Alan Andres expands on their popular American Experience PBS film by telling the stories of important people to the Apollo missions that you probably don't know about.

Artefacts from the mission have been exhibited at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum in Virginia, including the space suit Armstrong travelled in. "Artemis" is named after the twin sister of Apollo who is also the Goddess of the Moon and the hunt.

The 2024 mission will include an actual, crewed landing, with the module first visiting to to-be-built Lunar Orbital Platform - Gateway, a space station that's meant to remain in lunar orbit and serve as a staging ground for communications, scientific research, habitation, and exploration.

Apollo 11 was the first of six successful manned moon landings to take place over the course of the next three years; no person has walked on the moon since Eugene Cernan departed along with Apollo 17 on December 14, 1972.

During his interview with Aldrin, Pence expressed confidence that Trump would follow through with the program despite his stated frustration with NASA's decision to use the moon as a jumping-off point to get to Mars.

A moonstruck nation celebrated the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11′s "giant leap" by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin at parties, races, ball games and concerts Saturday, toasting with Tang and nibbling MoonPies.

"The Orion is in the same cell as where Apollo was stacked 50 years ago".

In a separate tweet, Zhu criticized a sign at the Muslim Student Association table that said "My hijab empowers me". According to Newsweek , Muslim students at the college began a campaign to have Zhu expelled, shortly after.

"We had the problem of the five-year-old boy in a candy store", Armstrong would later go on to say. Sometimes the choices are clearly about the space program ("Space Oddity"), other times the lyrics are more abstract and might be more about the romance of the moon rather than actual astronauts and space travel. Armstrong's family was at the ceremony along with Aldrin, Gov. Ron DeSantis and NASA Director Jim Bridenstine. "We all love Apollo".

"Are you sure that President Trump is on board with this plan?".

Per The Verge, the question was asked during a photo op held at the Oval Office.

In a statement, Lockheed Martin said the two modules were stacked together earlier in the week in a test cell once used to prepare Apollo spacecraft.

Trump's insistence on going to Mars first is considered by some as a surprising turn since the President's very first space directive back in 2017 was instructing NASA to go back to the Moon and establish USA presence there.

While putting on the exhibition may not have been as large an operation as the actual moon landing, it did require special permission from the US Congress, White House support, and help from the Department of the Interior, the show's executive producer, Nick Partridge, told PBS, adding that the arrangement was "not quite as complicated as an actual launch pad, but it's actually its own kind of technical marvel". "I think 2021 is definitely achievable" for Artemis 1, he said.
