Trump says US Navy ship destroys Iranian drone in Strait of Hormuz

"The Boxer took defensive action against an Iranian drone, which had closed into a very, very near distance - approximately 1,000 yards - ignoring multiple calls to stand down and was threatening the safety of the ship and the ship's crew". It also added that the Revolutionary Guard Corps "denied claims that it has seized any other foreign ship as claimed by the foreign media in the last several days". "This is the latest of many provocative and hostile actions by Iran against vessels operating in worldwide waters".

Earlier today Iran admitted to illegally capturing a foreign ship carrying twelve crew members.

Iran's Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, said the country actually helped an unnamed vessel that suffered a technical malfunction in the Strait of Hormuz amid questions over the UAE tanker.

Crude prices, which had been falling since last week, ticked higher nearly immediately after reports of the incident.

If the MT Riah was indeed the ship seized, the move directly singles out UAE-bound and based vessels.

The seizure of the ship does not immediately appear to directly target any one particular country and shows the Revolutionary Guard cracking down on illegal smuggling of Iranian oil.

'US Is Always Welcome For Negotiations'
Had Pompeo not approved the visa it could have been a signal that the United States was trying to further isolate the Islamic Republic.

The drone was destroyed using electronic jamming, according to a United States defense official.

The UAE has been calling for a de-escalation of tensions between the USA and Iran in past weeks, but has also lobbied for tougher US policies on Iran and supports the maximum pressure campaign of sanctions imposed by the Trump administration since the USA unilaterally pulled out of Iran's nuclear deal with world powers.

About a fifth of the world's oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has threatened to retaliate for the British seizure of an Iranian oil tanker accused of violating sanctions on Syria. "The drone was immediately destroyed", Trump said from the East Room.

It's unclear what comes next, as tensions between the USA and Iran remain high.

The downing of the Iranian drone also came one month after a United States drone operating over the Strait of Hormuz was shot down by Iranian air defence system on June 19, which nearly led to a USA military retaliation against Iran. Iran denies involvement in any of the vessel attacks.
