Ex-Giants lineman Mitch Petrus dead at 32

Former NFL offensive lineman Mitch Petrus died Thursday night in Arkansas due to heatstroke, officials said.

Via the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the Pulaski County coroner said Petrus died at 10:45 p.m. local time after being brought to Baptist Health Medical Center-North Little Rock. The cause of death was listed as heat stroke, Hobbs said.

Originally the Giants' fifth-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Petrus appeared in 17 games with NY and made three starts before making brief stops with the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans practice squads prior to retiring from the NFL in 2012.

An Arkansas native, Petrus played at the University of Arkansas from 2006-09.

The former offensive lineman was drafted to play for the Giants in 2010 as a fifth-round pick, playing with the team until 2012. "Our thoughts go out to Mitch's family and friends", the Giants said in a statement following the news of Petrus' death.

The Arkansas Razorback Football team took to Twitter to share that they were "deeply saddened" by Petrus' passing. He was picked up by New England and played two games for the Patriots before being released.

In addition to Super Bowl XLVI, Petrus appeared in 27 career games. He will be greatly missed by many. In Lonoke County, where Petrus was working, temperatures were in the low-to-mid 90s. He had played football fir Carlisle High School prior. The heat index - the temperature it felt like - in the area where Petrus was working on Thursday was higher than 100 degrees (38 Celsius), according to the National Weather Service.
