Kieran Tripper leaves Spurs to join Atletico Madrid

Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid on Thursday confirmed the signing of Spain worldwide defender Mario Hermoso from Espanyol for a fee of around 25 million euros.

The 24-year-old centre-back has cost Atletico €25m (£22m/$28m) upfront, with a further €4m to follow in the shape of various performance-related add-ons.

Hermoso, who made his Spain debut last November, was on Real Madrid's books as a youngster before joining Espanyol in 2017.

With Atletico seeing Diego Godin, Lucas Hernandez, Filipe Luis and Juanfran all depart at the end of last season, Hermoso had always been suggested as a likely arrival.

But Espanyol's apparent initial reluctance to reduce their asking price from the reported €40m release clause in his contract meant negotiations dragged on.

Asked how much his decision to join Atletico was influenced by the chance to play for the most successful coach in Rojiblancos history, Trippier said: "He was massive".

Atletico Madrid's interest in the player resulted in a bid of 25 million euros, which was ultimately accepted by Espanyol, especially with the defender only having a year left on his contract.

"Because of all this, we welcome Trippier to the Atleti Family and wish him the best of luck at his new home".

He becomes the latest new arrival at the Wanda Metropolitano this summer, following in the footsteps of Joao Felix, Marcos Llorente, Kieran Trippier, Felipe, Hector Herrera, Renan Lodi and Ivan Saponjic.

'We know they've been to some major finals, they've done so well in La Liga over the years - they have a quality team and a magnificent coach.
