Jason Roy receives maiden Test call-up

He came into contention a year ago and has been rewarded soon after England's maiden World Cup triumph.

Roy racked up 443 runs in England's triumphant 50-overs World Cup campaign but is not a regular top-order batsman for Surrey in red-ball cricket. England World Cup winners Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes were rested for the Ireland Test.

But it is the three potential debutants who caught the eye in the squad announcement for what will be a four-day Test against Ireland, starting next Wednesday.

However, Jofra Archer, another waiting for a Test bow, and Mark Wood are both suffering with side strains.

Smith reflected: "It's not clear if Anderson will play at Lord's - that's one of the reasons why we have 13, not 12 in the squad".

Gregory, the 27-year-old Somerset bowling all-rounder, is promoted after impressing at Taunton and in the England Lions programme and has taken 44 wickets this season at an average of just 13.88.

The second season, which is reportedly eight episodes long , will be directed by Fincher, Andrew Dominik, and Carl Franklin. It's those murders, in fact, that Fincher has described as serving as the emotional through-line of the new season.

Archer, who has yet to make his England debut in Test cricket, will have a period of rest before being considered for selection for the Ashes.

The four-day Test between England and Ireland will be held from July 24. He had not been eligible to play for England until his selection for the Pakistan series in May that preceded the World Cup, and has been granted time off for a return to visit his family in Barbados before the Ashes get underway.

The trio are also included in a 16-man group for a pre-Ashes camp. With 44 wickets at 13.88 to date this season, he is in some of the best form of his career, and is now captaining the England Lions against Australia XI in a tour match at Canterbury.

Olly Stone too has been named for the Test against Ireland after having recovered from a stress facture that saw him return home from England's tour of West Indies in January.
