The list included red-haired emojis several different emoji of people and couples of all different skin-tones, a waffle, service animals, people in wheelchairs, and the much-anticipated white heart emoji. That's one small step for emojis, one giant leap for mankind. Apple also unveiled prosthetic arm and leg emoji.

Over all, the company is going to add 59 new emoji to the iPhone keyboard this fall with a software update, adding on to the already thousands of emojis that are available to iPhone users.

Today is the World Emoji Day and to mark the occasion, Apple and Google have revealed their plans to introduce brand-new emoji characters later this year.

The first widely used set of emoji were created for a Japanese mobile phone operator in the late 1990s, and hundreds of emoji were incorporated into the Unicode Standard a decade later. In that document, Apple suggested the inclusion of numerous newly added designs.

Apple is also looking to add more diversity to its options. The proposal was approved by the consortium a few weeks later.

At the time, Apple said, "Currently, emoji provide a wide range of options, but may not represent the experiences of those with disabilities".

Whatever your race, gender, sexual orientation, or disability, you'll be able to find an emoji to express yourself.

Apart from this, many additional categories of emoji are getting updated such as a new smiley face for yawning, a one-piece swimsuit, new food items including a waffle, falafel, butter and garlic, and new animals like the sloth, flamingo, orangutan and skunk. On the Android hamburger, the cheese was placed below the meat instead of on top of it.
