ICJ verdict: Here's all you need to know about Kulbhushan Jadhav case

The Foreign Office also said that Pakistan was a responsible member of the global community.

At 6.30 pm IST on Wednesday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, will deliver its verdict in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case between India and Pakistan. Pakistan's military court sentenced him to death on charges of espionage and terrorism in April 2017.

It said it "finds that the appropriate reparation in this case consists in the obligation of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to provide, by the means of its own choosing, effective review and reconsideration of the conviction and sentence of Mr. Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav, so as to ensure that full weight is given to the effect of the violation of the rights set forth" of the Vienna Convention on consular access. Besides being jurist, Xue, 64, served as senior official of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in various high level positions ever since she joined in 1980.

Jadhav, who was a former Indian Navy officer, was arrested by Pakistan in March 2016 and was sentenced to death a year later after being labelled a "spy" and "terrorist".

The world court also directed Pakistan to grant consular access to Jadhav, while holding that it had "breached" the Vienna Convention in this regard by denying him this right.

The court rejected Pakistan's contention that Jadhav wasn't entitled to those rights, as "an individual suspected of espionage". The suspect was said to be an officer of the Indian navy working for the covert agency to destabilize Pakistan.

In May 2017, India approached the ICJ over what it called the "farcical trial" that Jadhav underwent in a military court on the basis of an "extracted" confession, asking the execution to be stayed and to allow him consular access.

Neither India nor Pakistan would be able to claim victory after the ICJ verdict.

For Islamabad, Jadhav is the poster child of India's sinister and subversive activities in Pakistan.

Shortly after his arrest, Pakistan released a video of Jadhav apparently confessing to having conducted a campaign of attacks against Pakistani security and civilian targets and aiding armed groups in Balochistan, Pakistan's largest and least populated province that has seen both sectarian and separatist violence in the past decade.

"Apparently news reports from Hague suggests that not only Indian case for acquittal, release, return stands rejected but apparently [International] Court also upheld Jurisdiction of [Military] Court in #Kalbhushan case". His execution has been restrained by the ICJ till the adjudication of the case.

On Wednesday, some of Jadhav's friends in Mumbai wore "India with Kulbhushan" t-shirts and offered special prayers ahead of ICJ's verdict.

Pakistan has asserted that Jadhav was arrested in a counter-intelligence operation in 2016.
