Activists from the Extinction Rebellion group installed a yellow boat on Leeds Bridge, near the Bridgewater Place skyscraper, painted with the words "Planet before profit".

Some of the 1,000 people arrested during that protest appeared in court this week.

Extinction Rebellion is demanding that the United Kingdom government prevents further losses to biodiversity and commits to producing net zero greenhouse gases by 2025.

Dozens of protestors have blocked one of the main bridges over the River Aire in Leeds city centre as part of national day of action to highlight the issue of climate change.

THE environmental protesters who brought central London to a standstill this April launched their "summer uprising" yesterday, occupying parts of five major cities.

"We're here in solidarity with them and climate activists all over the world who are putting their lives on the line for climate justice", the spokesperson said.

Modelled on civil disobedience campaigns such as the US civil rights movement and Britain's Suffragettes, Extinction Rebellion has pushed climate up the agenda in Britain, where parliament declared a symbolic "climate emergency" in May.

Tents were also set up on grass in front of Cardiff City Hall, the home of the Welsh capital's local government, as campaigners looked set to camp there ahead of more disruption in the coming days.

Police say some protesters are facing charges of obstructing the work of the officers, but all of them have been released from police custody.

My eldest child is nine years old and for each of those nine years I've watched her future get steadily worse while everyone waits for everyone else to do something on climate change.

The group is calling on the Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service to drop cases against those arrested during the April protests.

"Now we're out of time and we can see climate breakdown all around us".
